ACDE Outstanding Service to Education Award
Emeritus Professor Peter Karmel AC CBE
Peter Karmel was foundation Vice Chancellor of Flinders University, before he chaired the Australian Universities Commission and the Commonwealth Tertiary Education Commission. His last fulltime post was as Vice Chancellor of the Australian National University. He chaired the committees responsible for the reports, Education in South Australia (1970), Schools in Australia (1973) and Quality of Education in Australia (1985). The Interim Committee of the Schools Commission, which produced Schools in Australia, had a profound influence on the quality of schooling in Australia. That committee's work provided the framework for subsequent Commonwealth involvement in schools education, and provided substantial evidence and argument for improving resources for schools, for providing equality of opportunity, for enhancing teachers' professionalism, and for opening schools to parent and community participation. He continues to be active in education debates, especially concerning the financing and administration of universities.
